Elderly Abuse Issues - 1420 Words

In 2012, the Canadian government established the Protecting Canada’s Seniors Act, which increased awareness on the issues facing the elderly population of 65 years and above (Sibbal Holroyd-Leduc, 2012). This paper will examine three contemporary challenges facing the cohort, including elderly abuse, dementia, and polypharmacy, while preventative strategies and recommendations addressing these issues will be offered. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines abuse towards seniors as, a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person (World Health Organization, 2017). One effective evidence-derived strategy to address this problem is the development of public awareness through education on the matter. This can be achieved via media campaigns that explicate what elder abuse entails, as well as how family members can take steps to minimize such occurrences (Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, 2014). In investigating prevention strategies for elder abuse, one causal factor identified was the negative attitudes held towards the general senior population (Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, 2014). The elderly will remain highly susceptible to abuse so long as they are devalued by society; it is thus imperative to focus prevention efforts on reshaping the attitudes that society possesses towards the elderly. This may take on various forms, including intervention at the level of the physician-client relationship and at the level of the child-parent relationship. The Importance of Innovation Architecture The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines innovation as â€Å"a new idea, method, or device† or â€Å"the introduction of something new† (Merriam-Webster, 2016). â€Å"New† almost always means change, which is a word that often strikes fear into the hearts of those who simply like to keep things as they have always been. Companies who pursue innovation architecture must develop a culture of innovation that is deeply embedded in its DNA. Otherwise, ideas will perish from malnourishment. According to John Carter, of TCGen, the co-inventor of the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones, â€Å"There is nothing more fragile, and at the same time more threatening as a radical new idea that does not fit into the current culture† (Carter, 2013). Frosts Mending Wall Essay - 960 Words

Robert Frosts Mending Wall represents two opposing ideas through its dialogue between two neighbors. The narrator represents a newer way of thinking while his neighbor embodies an older mindset. In the poem the two neighbors are repairing a wall or fence that separates their property line. Although neither of the two men has anything that could cross the fence, the young man has apple trees and the old farmer has pines. The wall has been broken down by the winter that sends the frozen ground swell under it and by the work of hunters (Frost 1177-1178). The two men work together to repair the wall, a task that seems unnecessary to the young narrator. The older neighbor cannot fathom the thought of not having a wall or boundary to†¦show more content†¦The man cannot understand why his neighbor cannot move beyond the past and what he was taught. In Carol Frosts article, Frosts Way of Speaking, she says, The first person speaker in the poem wishes his wall-mending partner would s peak for himself and think for himself. (Carol Frost 125). The narrator sees no reason for a wall to separate him from his neighbor, he points out several reasons the wall served no purpose to his neighbor. Neither men have anything that would harm the other, neither have presented an offense to the other, and no matter how many times they mend the wall, it will still be broken down again. The old neighbor, however, does not budge on his demand that the wall be repaired and continue to stand between them. Good fences make good neighbors (Frost 1178). This line is repeated several times in Mending Wall. This phrase is the embodiment of what the old neighbor believes. His father told him that good fences made good neighbors, and he stands firm in his belief in the truth of that statement. His young partner seems to believe that the only reason the man believes in his statement is because his Father told him to or because it is embedded into his way of thinking. William G.
